Vintage 1940s Stephen Stetson Open Road 4X Beaver Taupe 7 Trolley String+ Box

  
Another one of dad's vintage hats. This one is used but its a very rare hat! Its a Stephen Stetson who was the nephew of John B. Theres a long history of this you can read about on the internet.

This particular Open Road styled hat was the incentive for the issue that developed. In short he quit his uncles company, started his own, was sued by his uncle John Stetson for patent infringement and John Stetson won. Including the hat boxes and the hats.

The box and the liner stated Not Connected in Any Way With The John B. This is a 1940s early 1950s Stephen Stetson 4X Beaver.

The beaver is still very soft and it shape is still original to the Open Road. That trimmed edge is great. If you wanted to look like an old Cowboy this is the hat! Lots of age and plenty of patina!

That beautiful TAUPE color is the darker original taupe nit the light colored one they sell today. NOTE: so as far as the boxes are concerned. The hat was in the oval shaped box when it was removed from dads hat hoarded hat storage room.

Dad had this square box already on one of his display shelves. Hes swapping boxes, so you will be getting the square box, its in pretty good condition too.

It does have the original inserts too. Dads keeping the oval box and adding that to his collection. Dad has a few shelves of hats in their boxes but did not have this particular box. Now that 4X beaver is excellent! Its thick and very soft.

Back in that time a 4X Beaver was a great quality material! Stephen Stetson used a slightly higher grade beaver than his uncle John. At that time the John Stetson hats were 3X for there regular hat line, their most common and least expensive hat, so Stephen was trying to his uncle one better to get his company to compete with a better quality hat. Eventually Stephen Stetson did a whole name change is the 1950s to OLYMPIA Hats. They never did make it in the end.

We measure each hat 3 times to verify the size, whether tagged or not. This was tagged a size 7 and measures exactly to a size 7 or 22 inches. The very soft and thick beaver is a 3X but back then they didnt have the crazy scales like today! The older 10X is todays 100X.

This was found in dads hoard of hats. Please take a look at some of dads hats listed. Dating back to the 1890s, the very rare Stetson 1930s Nutria through many 1950s Stetsons, Resistol, Borsalino and many others.

Size 7 or 56 or 22 inches. Brim 3 inches with the beautiful trimmed Open Road edge.
